Selene Ulfers (Board Secretary for Historic Port Royal) currently lives in Historic Port Royal but was raised on a small farm in Caroline County, Virginia and a sailboat in St. Augustine, Florida. She and her husband, Nathanael, are working to restore the Johnson House (original portion built in 1750) and are slowly filling it with as many books, antique woodworking tools, handlooms, spinning wheels, sewing machines, gardening implements, and balls of yarn as possible. They also live with their 2-year old son, and cat, neither of which are much of a help with preservation carpentry, but excellent at making messes.
Selene is a textile artist and historian, former roller derby player (jammer position), National Geographic collector, and bookbinder. She studied Textiles at VCUarts, Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, and Marshfield School of Weaving. She was a previous artist-in-residence at George Washington Birthplace National Monument, and regularly demonstrates spinning or weaving techniques at local historical events.
She focuses primarily on early American dyeing and weaving methods, and is especially excited if the dye material can be foraged from a nearby forest. If not reading Richard Scarry to her son, or casting on another knitting project, Selene can be found tending her vegetable garden or, in the summer months, on a sailboat.
